The production of Netflix's new six-part suspense thriller series Below made one fundamental decision from the start: no green screens, no soundstages. Filming took place entirely on location in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, between July and October 2025, in small coastal communities on the Avalon Peninsula that locals had never seen transformed into a film set before.
Creator Jesse McKeown – a Newfoundlander himself – was direct about why the island was always the only option. "I just always felt like I wanted to set something here, that this would be a great place for something big and something kind of epic," he told Netflix Tudum. "It's such a unique landscape and such a rugged, dangerous, isolated, scary place in a lot of ways. But then there's also this other side to it, which is that the community is so warm and the people are so funny and unique and there are so many eccentricities about the place."
McKeown created and showruns the series, which was developed with local writers and directors on the production team. Directing duties are shared by Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn. The ensemble cast also includes Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell and Willow Kean.
St. John's – Newfoundland's capital city and the oldest city in North America – served as the primary production and studio base for the series. Its infrastructure, its established film production networks and its proximity to the coastal communities used for location shooting gave the production its operational anchor throughout the four-month shoot.
Pouch Cove – a small coastal community on the northern shore of the Avalon Peninsula, just north of St. John's – was used for on-location seaside shoots.
Brigus South – located along the Irish Loop on the Avalon Peninsula – provided the rugged backdrop for the show's remote fishing town setting. Its cliffside landscape, its narrow coves and its isolation from St. John's give it a character that feels genuinely removed from the world. Brigus itself was a major production hub throughout the shoot, with the production company using the local paint shop for set supplies.

Harbour Main – another Avalon Peninsula community on Conception Bay – contributed two of the production's most specific location details. The local pub Fureys was used for filming interior scenes. And outside the town, a house was built specifically for the production and towed out from nearby Conception Harbour for the water sequences. One local noted they "built the fish plant right over the front of a whole house – it was a cool set to drive through." A full-scale prop structure was also submerged underwater for a month before filming, allowing it to accumulate a genuine waterlogged decay.
Locals also spotted sets and crew in Conception Harbour and Twillingate – the latter a picturesque island community in Notre Dame Bay, in the island's central north, whose dramatic iceberg-watching coastline and traditional fishing culture make it one of Newfoundland's most visually distinctive communities. Some sets were built specifically for the show and later removed, leaving the communities as they were before the production arrived.
Production workers reportedly pumped artificial fog across the bays to enhance the series' eerie atmosphere – adding the only element that nature occasionally forgot to provide.
