This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Las Vegas – the one behind the neon. The city where a mob lawyer got a steakhouse, a stolen Mercedes ended up in a police traffic stop, and the oldest bar in town had front-row seats to atomic bombs.

Start on Fremont Street, where Sean Connery rolled a Mustang through an alley in Diamonds Are Forever – entering on the right wheels and somehow exiting on the left. Ford supplied the cars on one condition: Connery had to drive. The production shut down Vegas’ main road for three nights to get the chase. The car entered from the Universal Studios parking lot in Hollywood. It came out on Fremont Street. Nobody questioned the geography.

Walk to Oscar’s Steakhouse at the Plaza Hotel, where Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone looked out over Fremont Street in Casino. The restaurant is named after Oscar Goodman – former mob attorney, future mayor, self-proclaimed “Happiest Mayor in the Universe.” In preparation for the role, De Niro met the real man his character was based on: Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. Goodman once represented Rosenthal at a hearing about his casino ban. The costume budget for the film was a million dollars. De Niro wore seventy outfits. Sharon Stone wore forty.

Continue to Atomic Liquors, the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas, where Joe Pesci stabbed a man with a pen in Casino – a scene based on a real incident director Scorsese heard from a former gang member. The bar opened in 1952. Locals watched nuclear test blasts from the roof. The Rat Pack drank here. Scorsese used the garage next door as a production studio for over a month. Around the corner, a stolen Mercedes from The Hangover turned up in traffic being held by police during filming – a crew member spotted it, and the driver was arrested on the spot.
