This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Mumbai – the one that Hollywood chased through without landing, Bollywood danced across at dawn, and Christopher Nolan unlocked with months of negotiations. The city where a train station became a dance floor and a café became a spy’s safehouse.

Start on Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Road, where Tom Cruise tore through Mumbai traffic in a concept car in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Except he didn’t. Cruise was thousands of miles away. A body double drove the BMW – a prototype that later became the i8 – while a second unit crew captured the chase around Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The editing made it seamless. Mumbai played itself. Cruise played it from a distance.

Cinematic stops. Each one a film location. Each one a story you didn’t know.

Walk to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, where Dev Patel and Freida Pinto danced to “Jai Ho” under the Victorian dome in the finale of Slumdog Millionaire. Danny Boyle filmed across 120 real locations in Mumbai. This sequence alone took ten nights, shot between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. when the local trains stopped running. Six platforms. Thousands of extras. Fifteen takes. The choreographer’s name was accidentally left out of the credits – Boyle thanked him during his Oscar speech.

Continue to Café Mondegar on Colaba Causeway, where John David Washington called Robert Pattinson from the street in Tenet. The café – famous for its hand-painted murals by artist Mario Miranda – opened its doors at 4 a.m. specifically for the shoot. By 7:30, filming had moved to the Royal Bombay Yacht Club, a members-only institution founded in 1846 that had never allowed a film crew inside. It took months of negotiations and a board vote before Nolan’s team was granted access.
