Vancouver built Silicon Valley and the US Capitol: Here's where The Social Reckoning was filmed
The Social Reckoning
"We're way past making friends." Sony Pictures chose that tagline deliberately – a dark echo of The Social Network's most famous line, now repurposed for a story about what Facebook became in the decade after Zuckerberg coded his way to a trillion-dollar empire. The Social Reckoning – Aaron Sorkin's companion piece to David Fincher's 2010 film was filmed in Metro Vancouver between October 15 and December 9, 2025, under the working title Goliath.
Sorkin writes, directs and co-produces. Jeff Cronenweth – who shot The Social Network and Gone Girl for Fincher – returns as cinematographer. Alexandre Desplat scores. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. Mikey Madison – fresh from her Oscar win for Anora – plays Frances Haugen, the young Facebook engineer who became the company's most consequential whistleblower. Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, who broke the Facebook Files. The supporting cast includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr.
One of the first things Sorkin filmed for his new movie was the January 6 riots – the 2021 storming of the US Capitol by rioters attempting to prevent the government from formalising Joe Biden's election victory. In a video posted on X by journalist Ari Hoffman, the reenactment shows dozens of extras storming the steps as security attempts to hold them back – extras wearing MAGA hats and carrying American flags.
According to Vulture, the Vancouver Art Gallery on Robson Square was used as a stand-in for the US Capitol. The filming took place in late October 2025 in downtown Vancouver.

The most intimate confirmed filming location is Kissa Tanto at 263 East Pender Street in Vancouver's Chinatown – the Michelin one-starred Japanese-Italian restaurant, one of the most critically admired dining rooms in Canada. Local production company Farewell Productions filmed scenes there on October 22 and 23, 2025. A crane with a large tarp was positioned in front of the upscale bar and restaurant alongside electrical equipment and props, with pylons marking the perimeter.
The production filmed at English Bay – Vancouver's most popular downtown beach – beginning on November 3, 2025, with filming running from 5pm until 7am the following morning. Prep work had begun as early as October 27, with a crew building and dressing the set through to November 2. The set was created to look like a Caribbean beach bar with a vacation-type atmosphere – a striking contrast to the grey November Pacific.
In mid-November, the production filmed at the hotel at 800 West Georgia Street – the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the castle-like landmark on the corner of West Georgia and Burrard. Large cranes, production lighting and electrical equipment filled the exterior, with food trucks and vehicles staged outside. Background actors filtered in and out through a door near the Notch8 Restaurant & Bar, with filming scheduled from 7am to 11pm across two days.
The University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University are both confirmed filming locations – their campus architecture standing in for the prestigious American research university world the story inhabits. Cast members, crew vehicles and filming equipment were spotted throughout Metro Vancouver between October and December 2025, with local residents sharing behind-the-scenes footage on social media as the production worked through the city.
The Social Reckoning opens in theatres October 9, 2026.
