Spain built the Kingdom of Corona: Where Disney's Tangled was filmed

San Martín de Valdeiglesias – a small municipality in the Community of Madrid, known for its medieval castle and surrounding reservoir landscape – was used for exterior shots including scenes around Rapunzel's Tower.

Production moved to Tarragona in Catalonia from July 1 to July 10.

From July 20 to August 3, the production took over Girona's Barri Vell – the medieval old town – surrounding itself with stone stairways, ancient city walls and narrow medieval streets. Girona Cathedral, the Archaeological Walk, the Saint Dominic Steps, the Cathedral Gardens and other familiar landmarks were all transformed into parts of Rapunzel's fictional world of Corona.

Set photographs confirmed that the interior of Girona Cathedral was dressed with blue and gold curtains and tapestries adorned with Corona's sun crest. The hill of Sant Domènec was adorned with blue banners bearing a golden sun, the stairs lined with market stalls. A carpet ran down the centre of the stairway, with decorations on every step – the whole ensemble remaking the staircase into the heart of the fictional city of Corona.

While filming continued at the cathedral, the production simultaneously set up additional scenes at the Plaça dels Jurats.

After several weeks of building elaborate sets and staging iconic scenes in Girona's cobblestone streets and cathedral, production moved to the massive 550,000-square-metre fortress of Sant Ferran Castle in Figueres – one of the largest fortified structures in Europe.

On July 30 and 31, the medieval town of Besalú also hosted the Disney production crew. Horses, royal guards and extras in 18th-century maiden costumery arrived in the town, with filming taking place on the iconic Pont Vell – Besalú's ancient Romanesque bridge, built in the 11th century and one of the most photographed medieval bridges in Catalonia — and across several ancient cobblestone streets within the town. Both bridge and streets were decorated to represent the fictional kingdom of Corona. Besalú is a small town of fewer than 2,500 people, its medieval old town so completely preserved that it was declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble in 1966.

Filming is also taking place in Burgos in Castile and León.

After wrapping Burgos, the production moved to Álava in the Basque Country – specifically the Valdegovía valley and the area of La Campa in San Martín de Valparaíso. Filming in Álava is confirmed by Wikipedia's production record. The Álava shoot left behind one of the most striking visible marks of the entire production: a practical tower standing more than 30 metres tall, built in the meadows of San Martín de Valparaíso. Construction was first revealed in late June 2026 via fan accounts and a set leak on social media, with Tangled Updates on X posting: "Construction has begun on Rapunzel's tower for Disney's live-action Tangled in San Martín de Valparaíso in Spain." The area of La Campa – with its rock formations, woodland and small streams – was selected for its ability to recreate the fairy-tale setting

From Álava, filming moved across the regional border into Navarre – specifically the Urbasa-Andía mountain range. The Government of Navarre temporarily closed the SL-NA 290 Morterutxo and SL-NA 291 Zelaiaundi-Hayedo Encantado trails, along with the Sorosgain, Morterutxo and Bioitza parking areas, from August 6 through the end of August to accommodate the production. The closures were announced without naming the production – standard practice for a Disney shoot operating under tight secrecy.
