A fisherwoman lives on the fringes of a seaside village – unmarried, stinky, and constantly teased. One day, sick of her narrow-minded neighbours, she orders a wicker husband for herself. That is the premise. Olivia Colman plays the fisherwoman. Alexander Skarsgård plays the wicker husband. And the whole thing was filmed on medieval backlots in Hungary.
Wicker is co-written and co-directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, based on Ursula Wills-Jones's short story The Wicker Husband. It had its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival on January 24, where it was acquired by Black Bear Pictures. It opens in US theatres on October 23, in UK cinemas on October 30 and in Australia on November 5. The cast alongside Colman and Skarsgård includes Elizabeth Debicki, Peter Dinklage, Nabhaan Rizwan and Marli Siu.
Principal photography took place in Hungary in 2025, with Budapest serving as the production hub. The production utilised Hungary's 30% film tax incentive and was supported by local production company Royal Budapest Film Co. Production designer Renátó Cseh – who created what the Budapest Reporter described as a "whimsical yet grounded medieval aesthetic" – drew on Hungary's skilled artisan community to build the film's distinctive fairytale village environment.
One of the two primary studio locations is the medieval backlot of NFI Studios in Budapest – recently rebuilt for the Hungarian historical epic Rise of the Raven, set in 15th-century Europe.

The second studio location is Korda Studios' medieval backlot in Göböljárás – one of the most extensively used period filming environments in Europe. Originally built for the miniseries World Without End, the site expanded into an eight-acre set that famously stood in for Winchester and various Saxon fortresses across all five seasons of Netflix's The Last Kingdom.
The backlot's scale, its period-accurate construction and its decade of refinement across multiple productions gave Wicker the full visual architecture of a medieval seaside community.
Wicker is in theatres from October 23, 2026.
