Rome, the Dolomites and the Swiss Alps: The filming locations of Anton Corbijns A Talent for Murder

A Talent for Murder

Although A Talent for Murder is set almost entirely in Patricia Highsmith's chalet in the Swiss Alps, Anton Corbijn began filming in Rome in January 2025, with production also occurring in London, northern Italy and Switzerland – a globe-trotting location schedule for what is, at its heart, a two-person chamber thriller.

Patricia Highsmith spent the last years of her life in a house in Tegna, Switzerland, surrounded by cats, wine, and the Tom Ripley novels she had been writing since 1955. She died there in 1995. Anton Corbijn's film imagines what might have happened in those final years if a young man from a New York publisher arrived at her door with a proposition – and things turned sinister.

A Talent for Murder, directed by Anton Corbijn (The American, A Most Wanted Man, Life), is based on Joanna Murray-Smith's screenplay adaptation of her 2014 play. Helen Mirren plays Patricia Highsmith. Alden Ehrenreich plays the young publishing emissary who arrives to persuade her to write one final Tom Ripley novel. Olivia Cooke and Juliet Stevenson complete the cast.

Rome

Filming began in Rome in January 2025, with the production using some of the city's most iconic public spaces. The Spanish Steps – the 135-step monumental stairway connecting Piazza di Spagna to the Trinità dei Monti church above – were closed for an entire morning to shoot a pivotal scene.

Near the base of the Steps, the production filmed with Alden Ehrenreich at the Column of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Mignanelli – the 19th-century marble column standing in the small square immediately adjacent to Piazza di Spagna.

The trailer's establishing shot reveals another major Rome location: the famous Piazza del Popolo, viewed from the Terrazza del Pincio on Pincian Hill – the panoramic terrace above the city's northern gateway, its view across the oval piazza to the twin baroque churches and the river beyond one of Rome's most distinctive visual perspectives.

South Tyrol, Northern Italy

The production was filmed across stunning European locations, including the Dolomites – the dramatic limestone mountains of northern Italy whose alpine landscapes provide the visual transition between the Roman chapter and the Swiss setting.

A scene with Clementine Balfour, played by Olivia Cooke, was filmed in the centro storico near the historic Neumarkt arcades of Egna (Neumarkt) in South Tyrol – a small market town in the Adige valley with medieval arcaded streets and Germanic-Italian character.

Switzerland and London

Location filming took place in Switzerland – on the terrain that the story inhabits. Highsmith's actual home in Tegna, in the canton of Ticino, is where the writer spent her final years, and the Swiss location work gives the film that feeling of home. London is said to have completed the production's location footprint with additional production work. However, specific London locations have not been publicly confirmed.

A Talent for Murder premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2026 and opens in US theatres on October 23.
