At the end of September, Fraser filmed at the former MOD Woodbridge military base in Suffolk. He strapped on a crash helmet and got behind the wheel of a vintage silver-and-red “EPSA” rocket car for what appears to be a 1957 speed-trial racing sequence. His stunt double did most of the driving. Extras on the former base wore “Rick O’Connell Racing” jackets.
Michael Johnston told Variety on the Academy Museum Gala red carpet that the Book of the Dead team was heading to Morocco to shoot with the camels. They are there now.
At the end of October, Tangier’s medina is being transformed into a film set. Market stalls, signs and set pieces have appeared around the Kasbah and Bab El Bhar squares, near the Tanger Ville port, resembling a traditional Moroccan souk. The transformation is visible in the narrow streets and the squares – stalls, new signs and various set elements installed to give the area the appearance of a working market. Footage from October 27 shows Weisz, Fraser and Michael Johnston filming on a crowded market set – colourful awnings, umbrellas and stalls, extras in period dress, a wooden cart in the foreground.
After Tangier, reports indicate the production is heading south to Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga – the desert towns on the edge of the Sahara in southeastern Morocco – before wrapping in Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate sits below the High Atlas and has earned its nickname: the Hollywood of Africa. Atlas Studios, a working backlot about five kilometres from town, is one of Morocco’s most accessible film sets to visit. Whether the production returns to the same Moroccan locations used for the other Mummy movies has not been confirmed.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead opens in theatres on October 15, 2027.
