From Lisbon's streets to a London private members club: Where Love of Your Life was filmed
Love of Your Life
Love of Your Life was shot in approximately 40 days across four countries: Portugal, New Orleans, London and Boston. Ryan Gosling produced it. Rachel Morrison – the first woman ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography – directed it. And she had one non-negotiable condition: everything would be filmed on location.
"Shooting on location was integral, so the cities would feel like characters and take on their own personalities," Morrison told interviewers. "You might be planning to shoot something here, and then you see this magical thing happening over there and you can pivot; whereas if you've committed to plates on an LED screen, it is what it is."
Margaret Qualley plays Maya, a woman who loses her husband and goes on a journey to find a way forward. Aaron Pierre plays Felix. Patrick Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Basso and Catherine Keener complete the cast. Julia Cox wrote the screenplay.
The trailer's most immediately recognisable location is Lisbon. Maya walks up the road next to a yellow tram – the iconic Lisbon electrico that has become the visual shorthand for the city's particular combination of beauty and melancholy. The specific location, confirmed via the trailer and a behind-the-scenes photograph by photographer Chiabella James published on IMDb, is Rua de São Domingos near the intersection with Rua do Sacramento a Lapa in Lisbon's Lapa neighbourhood – a quiet, elegant residential district of the city's historic hillside.
Maya and Felix attend festivities on Largo da República in Alcochete – a small riverside town on the southern bank of the Tagus Estuary, facing Lisbon across the water. Alcochete's whitewashed buildings, its riverside character and its Largo da República – the town's main square, animated by local life and celebration – provide the film an authentic Portuguese atmosphere.
The trailer's cliff and rock formation sequences were filmed at Praia de Marinha in Lagoa, on Portugal's southern Algarve coastline. Praia de Marinha is consistently rated among the most beautiful beaches in Europe – its golden limestone cliffs, its dramatic sea caves and rock arches, and its clear blue-green water are extraordinary.

From Portugal, production moved to New Orleans for a three-day shoot from October 22 to 24, confirmed by the Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy. Several scenes were shot at The Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue – a Victorian Italianate mansion built in 1883 on the live oak-lined streetcar corridor.
Boston is the film's home base – the city where Maya's story is rooted and where it ultimately resolves. We cannot yet confirm any specific locations in Boston.
Maya and Charlie – Gabriel Basso – share a scene at the Sessions Arts Club at 24 Clerkenwell Green in London. The Sessions Arts Club occupies the former Middlesex Sessions House – an 18th-century courthouse converted into one of London's most atmospheric private members clubs, its listed interiors including Victorian courtroom panelling, gilded plasterwork and dramatic high ceilings.
Love of Your Life had its world premiere at TIFF on September 13, 2026, opens in cinemas on October 7, 2026 and on Prime Video from October 14.
