A beachclub on the sand of Ameland. A striking harbour building in Harlingen. A working fishing harbour between two UNESCO nature reserves. Eb – the Dutch crime thriller that opened in cinemas on May 14, 2026 and is now in the Top 10 on Netflix – was filmed entirely in Frisian north.
Eb is directed by Klaas de Jong – who spent his career as a producer before making his feature film directing debut. Screenplay by Lars Boom. Vajèn van den Bosch plays Lynn, an ambitious ecologist who returns to her childhood home of Ameland for research and quickly finds herself drawn into a dangerous mystery involving smuggling and long-buried secrets. Mingus Dagelet plays Stefan, Jord Knotter plays Boris, Monica Hofman plays detective Dees. Also in the cast: Juvat Westendorp, Ellen ten Damme, Bart Harder, Raymond Thiry, Andreas Lessig, Robin Komarowski, Mike Libanon and Allard Geerlings.
The critical reception was muted. The Netflix audience is ignoring the reviews entirely.
Ameland
Most of the filming took place on Ameland itself – the Wadden Sea island where the story is set. Beach club scenes were filmed at The Sunset on Oranjeweg 61 – the laid-back beachclub on the sand of Ameland with hardwood lounge furniture, a restaurant right at the waterline and what many consider the finest sunset view in the Netherlands.
The wide open Wadden landscapes, the island’s isolation and the specific atmosphere of a small community where everyone knows each other and secrets can simmer for years give Eb its visual foundation. Ameland plays itself.
