This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Amsterdam – the one directors fell for and never quite left. The city that staged car chases on bridges, love stories on bicycles, and a James Bond scene that wrapped in a single day. Where the canals know more about cinema than most studios do.

We pass the Damrak, where Rutger Hauer and Monique van de Ven cycled through the city after their wedding in Turkish Delight – a scene voted the best in Dutch film history. Director Patrick Hughes came to Amsterdam for one scene and stayed for three weeks – once he saw the city, he moved half the London scenes here. Before they could shoot the canal chase, the crew had to clear hundreds of bicycles from the bottom of the waterways.

Cross to the Aluminium Bridge, where George Clooney and Brad Pitt strolled across planning their next heist in Ocean’s Twelve. Half the city turned upside down trying to catch a glimpse. Dutch actors Jeroen Krabbé and Jeroen Willems scored roles in the film – Amsterdam got its own part too.

Continue to Reguliersgracht, where Sean Connery pulled up in a mustard-coloured Triumph Stag to visit Tiffany Case in Diamonds Are Forever. The entire Amsterdam shoot – this scene and the Skinny Bridge – was completed in a single day. And Bond? He drove against the traffic to get there.

End at the Homomonument, where two Ted Lasso characters shared a quiet, meaningful conversation in one of the series’ most powerful scenes. Writers Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt lived in Amsterdam for years, performing at Boom Chicago and playing FIFA after shows. The episode feels like a love letter to the city – because it is. There would be no Ted Lasso without Amsterdam.
