Where was Blade Runner 2099 filmed? From a Czech spa to Catalonia's industrial coast

Blade Runner 2099

The production had a difficult birth. Originally announced in 2022, Blade Runner 2099 was due to begin pre-production at Belfast Harbour Studios in Northern Ireland before the WGA writers' strike halted everything in May 2023 and the Belfast plans were scrapped entirely in October. When cameras finally rolled, they did so in Prague — June 2024, Barrandov Studio. And on location in Prague and Catalonia, Spain.

Barrandov Studios served as the production's main base. FilmUnited handled local production services. The production employed hundreds of local crew members across construction, costumes, special effects, stunt work and technical departments, with industry estimates placing Czech spending at approximately CZK 1.8 billion — one of the country's largest recent foreign productions. Filming wrapped in late December 2024, with brief additional shooting in spring 2025.

Prague on location

Beyond the studio, cameras moved across Prague and the wider Czech Republic. In early August, streets near Prague's Main Train Station and Vrchlického Sady park were reserved for production equipment, including portions of Washingtonova Street adjacent to the southern edge of the park.

In mid-August, filming moved to Karlín, where portions of Pernerova and Thámova streets — directly adjacent to the Žižkov Tunnel — were reserved.

In October, the production travelled north to Jablonec nad Nisou, where the former city municipal spa — long neglected — was used for filming from October 14 to 17, with portions of Budovatelů Street closed during the shoot. Marek Řídel from Film Makers s.r.o. explained how it was found: "Our company searches for and offers interesting spaces for shooting films throughout the country. The building of the former Jablonec city spa was one of many. The foreign filmmakers were so impressed with the space and atmosphere that they decided to film their work here in Jablonec."

Catalonia

After Prague, the production moved to Catalonia, using a string of specific industrial and coastal locations across the region. At Salinas Beach in Cubelles, dockside sequences were filmed near an old thermal power station. The Port of Tarragona contributed its industrial zones adjacent to large cement silos. In Sant Adrià de Besòs, the production framed shots around the municipality's three iconic decommissioned smokestacks. Sant Feliu de Llobregat added industrial texture through a local cement factory.

Blade Runner 2099 premieres on Prime Video in November 2026.
