Where Was Treasure & Dirt Filmed? Inside an extraordinary Australian filming location - Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy sits in the outback roughly 850 kilometres north of Adelaide, on a treeless plain where summer temperatures routinely exceed 50 degrees Celsius. It is known as the opal capital of the world — and it looks, in certain lights, like the surface of another planet. 

Productions have been drawn to its otherworldly appearance for decades. While Treasure & Dirt may introduce many viewers to Coober Pedy for the first time, the iconic outback town is no stranger to film crews. It has featured in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Pitch Black, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mortal Kombat, Stars on Mars, and Limbo — all of them drawn by the same quality: a landscape that looks like nowhere else on earth.

Many of the locals live in underground homes called "dugouts" carved directly into the hillsides — cool and dark while the desert blazes outside. Churches, shops, hotels and entire neighbourhoods exist underground.

Beyond Coober Pedy, the production drew on two further South Australian locations. The Flinders Ranges — the ancient mountain chain north of Adelaid — provided exterior landscape sequences that expand the world of the series beyond the opal town itself.
