Where was The Whisper Man filmed? The production filmed in five New Jersey towns

The film used an extraordinary number of New Jersey communities, spreading across the northern and central parts of the state. Confirmed filming towns include Plainfield, Rahway, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Summit, Westfield, Bayonne, Hoboken, Jersey City, Kearny, Allendale, Carlstadt, Moonachie, Westwood, Montclair, Newark, Roseland, Paterson, Woodland Park, Avenel and Colonia in Woodbridge, and North Plainfield. The geographic spread traces almost the entire social topography of northern New Jersey.

In May, the production moved to Montclair, setting up for nearly two weeks – May 19 to 27 – at a historic building at 60 South Fullerton Avenue. Residents reported production trucks, cables and equipment throughout the neighbourhood. The building's identity has not been officially disclosed, but its extended occupation by the production suggests it housed a significant interior location.

The fictional town of Featherbank is primarily Westfield. De Niro, Scott and Monaghan were spotted filming at a private home on East Dudley Avenue between Lawrence Avenue and Elm Street during the first week of April. Wilson School in Westfield was also used. The surrounding residential streets of Willow Avenue, Tappan Avenue and Rockview Avenue all hosted production activity.

The production used a range of North Jersey locations chosen for their specific visual and dramatic character. The Westwood Diner Pancake House provided the classic New Jersey diner setting. Hudson Plaza Motel gave the production a roadside lodging environment. The Garrett Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park – the forested ridge above Paterson with its sweeping views across northern New Jersey – contributed the more isolated natural environments the story required.

Summit Train Station and its surrounding streets provided the commuter-town character essential to Featherbank's suburban identity. Robert De Niro was seen filming at Paterson City Hall – a grand Romanesque Revival building in Passaic County.

Plainfield's city government announced in advance that filming would take place in the Downtown Entertainment District and the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District on April 4, April 29, May 9 and May 12–16 – four separate production visits.

Locals documented film crews in North Plainfield on April 11 and 12. Scotch Plains was also confirmed by NJ.com as part of the production's New Jersey footprint.

Two active or historic correctional facilities feature in the production. East Jersey State Prison – one of New Jersey's oldest and most architecturally formidable prisons, its Victorian turreted gate visible from the Garden State Parkway. Hudson County Correctional Facility presented a more complex challenge. Locations manager Anthony Pisani described it as one of the most difficult locations in the entire production: because it is an active prison, background checks and security measures were required for every cast and crew member before filming could proceed.
