Vancouver Becomes 1990s Seattle for Prime Video's Elle — The Legally Blonde Prequel

Reese Witherspoon watched Netflix's Wednesday and thought: Elle Woods was once in high school, too. Who was she before Harvard? That question became Elle, a Prime Video prequel series premiering July 1, 2026, set in 1995 and filmed almost entirely in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. One exception is a shopping scene filmed on Rodeo Drive.
The original Legally Blonde (2001) was shot in Los Angeles and Cambridge, Massachusetts, leaning hard into the Southern California sunshine that defined Elle's Bel-Air world and the cold East Coast architecture of Harvard. The prequel makes a sharp left turn: in this version, Elle doesn't live in Bel-Air. She's been uprooted to rainy Seattle, adjusting to a new school and a new life. Vancouver, reliably grey in spring, plays the Pacific Northwest city without much convincing required.
The Bridge Studios and the Lower Mainland
Principal photography for season one began on March 31, 2025, under the working title Park La Brea, with The Bridge Studios in Burnaby as the primary soundstage base. Production wrapped July 22, covering nearly four months across Metro Vancouver and its surrounding communities.
The Bridge Studios — situated on Still Creek Avenue in Burnaby, a few kilometres east of Vancouver — is one of Canada's largest studio complexes, with nine soundstages and long-established infrastructure for exactly this kind of television production.
But the production didn't stay on stage. Burnaby's Central Park was used for outdoor scenes in late May 2025, while the Queen Elizabeth Theatre — Vancouver's most prominent performing arts venue — appeared as a competition venue for the show's Cross Country District Championships sequences.
The production also filmed in Kitsilano, on West 1st Avenue — a neighbourhood that sits close enough to the water to feel genuinely Pacific Northwest.
Further afield, Port Coquitlam hosted filming in late April 2026, with the southeast corner of Kingsway Avenue and Shaughnessy Street closed to the public for several days. Season 1 also includes a scene filmed in Tsawwassen, the southern tip of Metro Vancouver near the ferry terminal.
