United Kingdom under armed occupation: Filming on location for Army of Shadows

Army of Shadows

Army of Shadows — a six-part Channel 4 and Canal+ drama written by Ronan Bennett (MobLand, The Day of the Jackal) and directed by Lisa Gunning (Black Doves, The Power) —began filming in Liverpool in July 2026. The production will also shoot in Manchester, London, and Paris.

It is inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville's 1969 movie and Joseph Kessel's novel, both of which dramatised the French Resistance under Nazi occupation. Bennett's version takes that framework and transplants it to a near-future Britain under de facto American occupation.

Liverpool

Lark Lane in Aigburth — a tree-lined street of independent cafés, restaurants and boutiques in south Liverpool — became the production's first publicly visible location. The street was shut down for filming on July 1, with military men, military vehicles and flags appeared on the buildings — half Union Jack, half Stars and Stripes.

Church Street and High Street in nearby Great Budworth, Cheshire were similarly locked down on July 6, with Budworth Lane near Brownslow House closed entirely.

Great Budworth is not new to this. The well-preserved Cheshire village has previously appeared in the BBC's War of the Worlds, Netflix's Missing You, and Sky's Brassic. Its cobblestone streets, half-timbered buildings, and absence of modern signage make it a good period-appropriate filming location.

Manchester and London

Manchester and Londen are both confirmed as filming locations but no specific locations has yet been confirmed.

Paris

The production is also planning to cross the Channel to Paris — a nod, perhaps, to the story's origins in Melville's France, or a plot thread that extends the resistance narrative beyond British borders. Paris is confirmed in the official production announcement from Channel 4 and StudioCanal, though specific locations and scenes remain undisclosed.

Army of Shadows airs on Channel 4 and Canal+. A global release date has not yet been confirmed.
