Twenty-two years. That's how long it's been since Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo danced to "Thriller" in a Manhattan loft and made a generation fall in love with the idea of waking up at 30 and getting a second chance. Netflix's reimagining — working title Authentic — began filming on June 23, 2026, in Los Angeles.
Emily Bader and Logan Lerman star as the 30-year-old leads, with Brett Haley directing. Jennifer Garner returns not in front of the camera but behind it, as executive producer.
The production is filming entirely within Los Angeles County, leaning on the city's own suburban and historic neighbourhoods rather than recreating the New York setting of the 2004 original.
The production is filming across greater Los Angeles for its full 35-day shoot. Casting calls from early July sought extras described as "high-end, eccentric LA influencer types" — suggesting the adult world Jenna wakes into in 2026 involves a very specific and very current social milieu. The magazine editor of the original has presumably been updated for a world where influence moves faster and the dream job looks different
Zuma Beach, Malibu
Film crews were spotted at Zuma Beach in Malibu, setting up what appeared to be a wedding or outdoor celebration scene on the beach.

Country Club Drive, Long Beach
Additional location work took place in Long Beach residential streets, 4252 Country Club Drive - the same house was a filming locations for Donnie Darko. The tree-lined streets and mid-century architecture of Long Beach's older neighbourhoods provide a convincing late-1990s suburban feel, the kind of block where a thirteen-year-old might make a wish on a night that changes everything.
The Ebell Club, Long Beach
Built in 1924, the Ebell Club of Long Beach is a beautiful example of Churrigueresque-style architecture. It was originally built as an exclusive social club for women, survived the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, and has been a designated historic landmark for decades. On any given weekend it hosts weddings, proms, and corporate dinners. In June 2026, it hosted the 13 Going on 30 reboot.
