Five years. That is how long Extraction 3 has been trying to film in Australia. The original plan for Extraction 2 was a Sydney shoot starting September 2021. COVID-19 lockdowns ended that plan entirely, sending the production to Prague and Vienna instead. Now, with principal photography confirmed underway from July 23, 2026, Chris Hemsworth is finally filming a Tyler Rake film in his home country.
Director Sam Hargrave was direct about the significance: "We're very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our Extraction saga here in New South Wales." Hemsworth announced the start of production himself on Instagram — a behind-the-scenes photograph alongside Idris Elba and Hargrave, captioned simply: "E3 here we go!"
The production is set to create 450 local jobs and contribute an estimated $127 million to the New South Wales economy, supported by the Australian Government's Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund administered by Screen NSW. Principal photography runs through October 9, 2026. David Weil (Citadel, Hunters) wrote the screenplay, replacing Joe Russo. Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake alongside Idris Elba as Alcott and Golshifteh Farahani.

New set photos surfaced on August 20 and 21 showing Chris Hemsworth filming scenes at Avalon Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches — confirming that production is well underway on Australian soil. Avalon Beach is a long, exposed surfing beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches peninsula — backed by sandstone headlands, and surrounded by national park.

Filming has officially commenced on the NSW South Coast as well as Sydney, with the South Coast providing the geographic and visual range that a single city location could not deliver: from Sydney's Northern Beaches to Port Kembla, the industrial port south of Wollongong, the production is using New South Wales in its full width.
The production is also filming in Thailand, returning the franchise to one of its original filming territories. The first Extraction filmed extensively in Thailand — in Ban Pong in Ratchaburi Province — and the country's dense urban environments, its waterways and its visual intensity are deeply embedded in the franchise's DNA.
Extraction 3 wraps October 9, 2026. A late 2027 Netflix premiere is the most realistic target.
