Elizabeth Day set her novel in the Cotswolds. The production team changed the location to make it more authentic to the two Welsh leads. So The Party – ITV1 and ITVX’s new five-part thriller – is set in the fictional Welsh town of Denby and filmed entirely across south Wales, with one exception: New College, Oxford.
The series is written by and stars Sarah Solemani, produced by World Productions, ITV Studios and Stoic Pictures, and directed by Viviane Andereggen. Luke Evans plays Martin Gilmour, a journalist whose life has been shaped by his complicated friendship with Ben Fitzmaurice – Tom Cullen – a wealthy and charismatic politician. The cast also includes Joanna Scanlan, Lydia Leonard, Lindsay Duncan, Douglas Hodge, Sam Troughton, Sinéad Matthews, Bally Gill, Amaka Okafor and Rakie Ayola.
Filming took place across Cardiff, Bridgend, Port Talbot and Swansea in late 2025 and early 2026.

The primary production base was Dragon Studios in Bridgend – the Welsh studio facility at the heart of the region’s screen industry. Crucially, Dragon Studios, Llanharan House and Merthyr Mawr House are all within a few miles of each other, making the Bridgend area the operational centre of the entire production.
The Fitzmaurice family’s grand country estate – Denby Hall – was assembled from three separate locations. Exterior shots were filmed at Llanharan House in Llanharan, its period facade and surrounding grounds providing the country house identity. Interior scenes were shot at Merthyr Mawr House in Bridgend – the Grade I listed mansion in its rural Merthyr Mawr setting. The chapel scenes inside Denby Hall were filmed at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff – the Art Deco civic building on Cathays Park, more commonly used as an event venue, here transformed into the private chapel of an aristocratic Welsh estate. Three locations, one house.

Two different locations were used to recreate the fictional Denby Police Station. Heath Park West in Cardiff provided one setting. Swansea’s Guildhall – the grand civic building completed in 1934, its imposing colonnaded exterior and institutional interiors giving it the authority of a regional police headquarters – provided the other.
The school and university sequences were assembled from five separate locations across Wales and England. Howells School in Llandaff, Cardiff provided the exterior and classroom settings. Margam Discovery Centre in Port Talbot was used for the dormitories. Llandaff Rugby Club provided the rugby field. The Glamorgan Building of Cardiff University’s main campus and University Hall were used for additional Oxford scenes alongside Swansea’s Guildhall. The one location outside Wales: New College Cloisters in Oxford, used for the historic-looking corridors that needed to feel authentically ancient rather than Welsh Victorian.
The Heronston Hotel & Leisure Club in Bridgend played a B&B in the fictional town of Denby.
Cardiff contributed extensively to the production in multiple guises. Some London scenes were filmed in Cardiff. Luke Evans was spotted filming in Roath Park in December 2025, bringing what Wales Online described as “a touch of Tinseltown glamour” to the famous lakeside park. On January 26, 2026, filming took place at Mocka Lounge on Mill Lane in Cardiff. The cocktail bar Nightshade was also used. Additional locations include Maindy Barracks, houses in the Heath and Roath, Cardiff Bay and an Airbnb in Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed.
The Party is streaming now on ITVX.
