Here's where Enigma Variations was filmed across New Jersey, New York and Italy
Enigma Variations
Enigma Variations – Netflix's limited series based on André Aciman's 2017 novel, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alicia Vikander – has been filming since July 2026 under the working title Dolce, moving between southern Italy, Hoboken, Jersey City, Morristown and Manhattan
André Aciman wrote Call Me by Your Name. Then he wrote Enigma Variations – a novel about a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him over the course of ten transformative years. Netflix described the series as "full of yearning, very much in the spirit of its predecessor Call Me by Your Name."
The series is based on Aciman's 2017 novel. Amanda Kate Shuman (The Wheel of Time) serves as showrunner and writer. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Paul – a man whose sexuality, identity and capacity for love are shaped and reshaped by a succession of relationships over a decade. Alicia Vikander co-stars.
Between July 20 and August 8, filming took place across Italy.
The island of Ponza in the Tyrrhenian Sea provided one confirmed Italian location – Aaron Taylor-Johnson was spotted filming on Ponza.
On the Adriatic coast, production moved through the Gargano peninsula in Puglia. On July 19, the Netflix set landed in the historic centre of Monte Sant'Angelo. From July 20 to 22, filming moved to Mattinata and the Baia delle Zagare – a spectacular bay with white limestone cliffs, sea caves and fragile rock stacks.
The mayor of Mattinata called the production "an extraordinary opportunity" to put the town at the centre of tourism promotion. The production required temporary street closures, parking bans and traffic rerouting across local municipalities to accommodate the film equipment. Manfredonia served as the logistical base for the Puglian chapter.
A casting call confirmed further Italian filming in Salento – the heel of Italy's boot – between July and August 2026, with extras and special figurations recruited for scenes scheduled across the region.

On August 31, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was spotted filming scenes for the series in Brookdale, New Jersey – confirming that the New Jersey location work extends well beyond Jersey City into the state's suburban communities.
Reported filming locations include Greenwich Village, Hoboken and Jersey City. Hoboken. On September 10, the production filmed around 6th Avenue and West 9th to 14th Street in Greenwich Village.
Later in September, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Sarah Pidgeon were spotted filming at the IFC Center at 323 6th Avenue – the Greenwich Village cinema whose outline reveals its original 19th-century church structure. Before it was renamed the IFC Center, the Waverly Theater had been a temple of cinema since 1937.
Filming has also taken place in Morristown, with production at Tavern Off the Green – the restaurant booked by the production from approximately 6am to 5pm for the day's shoot.
A late 2027 premiere on Netflix is the most realistic expectation.
