In 1972, Dr. Alex Comfort published The Joy of Sex – a straightforwardly illustrated guide to human sexuality that became one of the bestselling books of the decade, sold 12 million copies worldwide and permanently altered the landscape of publishing. The story behind how it came to exist is, by all accounts, extraordinary. And now it is being made into a film in London.
The Joy of Sex – the story behind the 1970s sex manual – is currently filming in London, directed by Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget Jones's Baby). Filming began in July and August 2026 and is ongoing. The cast includes Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Julianne Moore, David Tennant and Jason Watkins.
Behind-the-scenes photographs confirm Colin Firth filming scenes on and around Links Road in London. Links Road sits in the London Borough of Merton, its brick Victorian and Edwardian terraces unchanged in fundamental character since the decade the film is set in.

In early August 2026, film crews were spotted filming at The Clapham Grand on St John's Hill in Clapham Junction – the grand Victorian music hall and theatre built in 1900, its ornate terracotta facade and elaborate interior making it one of south London's most visually distinctive period venues.
No release date has been confirmed. Filming is ongoing.
