A fugitive CIA agent accused of killing a high-ranking officer. The victim's widow investigating from the other side. A global conspiracy uncovering itself through the streets of Spain. Safe Houses is Apple TV+'s new spy thriller – and it went to considerable lengths to build its world on real Spanish streets.
Safe Houses follows a fugitive CIA agent accused of killing a high-ranking officer in Madrid and the victim's widow as they investigate the murder from opposite sides, uncovering a global conspiracy. The series is produced by Apple Studios and wiip. Ana de Armas stars alongside Jennifer Connelly and Leland Orser.
The series is filming in Madrid, Spain, with production beginning in March 2026.

The production's location work took place in San Lorenzo de El Escorial – the historic royal town at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, best known for the vast monastery and palace complex of El Escorial. For the filming of Safe Houses, the town's centre was temporarily transformed to simulate San Sebastián, the Basque Country's coastal city, complete with ikurriñas – the official flag of the Basque Country – and Basque decorative elements throughout.

The transformation was extensive and publicly visible. Road closures affected Plaza de la Constitución, Floridablanca and Calle del Rey. On the facade of the Town Hall, the flags of the Community of Madrid and the municipality were temporarily replaced by the ikurriña alongside the Spanish flag. Ikurriñas also adorned the balconies of several private homes throughout the filming area.
Local establishments participated in the transformation. The well-known Ku4tro restaurant in Plaza de la Constitución became the fictional Itxasalde Jetetxea – a seafood restaurant with a name in Euskera. On Floridablanca Street, traditional kiosks displayed names in Euskera, offering pintxos, txakoli and typical Basque souvenirs. The establishment Don Felipe was transformed into the tavern Kafe Hutsa, with local signage across the area appearing in Euskera throughout the shoot
No premiere date has been confirmed. Safe Houses is in production.
