This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Madrid – the one that played Mexico City, Turin, and 1920s Spain without leaving the centre. The city where streets were repainted overnight, billions rained from the sky, and a café on Plaza de Canalejas became an Italian rendezvous point for a CIA source.

Start on Calle de Santa Isabel, where Linda Hamilton and Mackenzie Davis ran through the streets of what was supposed to be Mexico City in Terminator: Dark Fate. Director Tim Miller chose Madrid over Mexico after a location scout was murdered during the production of Narcos. The crew transformed the Lavapiés neighbourhood – ageing cars, pink-and-white taxis, hand-painted graffiti. A Mexican-born actor coached the cast on the accent. Not a single frame was shot in Mexico.

Walk to Plaza de Canalejas, where Matt Damon tracked down a CIA contact at Café del Príncipe in The Bourne Ultimatum. The entire film is set in Turin, but the meeting was shot here in Madrid. The crew changed the street sign on Calle de la Cruz to “Via Grotto” to sell the Italian location. Greengrass and Damon spent just five days in the city – and captured half the film’s European sequences.

Continue to Plaza de Callao, where over 140 million euros in fake banknotes rained from the sky in Money Heist. After every take, the crew had to pick up every single bill and start again. They nearly missed their deadline to cover the square’s giant advertising screens with green screens – the sponsors had agreed to a window, and the clock was ticking. The Professor’s Dalí mask, worn during his broadcast to the nation, was modelled after the surrealist painter known for craving exactly this kind of attention.
