A serial killer lives under six feet of concrete in Western Pennsylvania: Here's where Apple TV's Nocturne was filmed

Nocturne

Fresh off three Emmy wins for Adolescence, Stephen Graham is turning up the creep factor as a serial killer in Nocturne – Apple TV+’s new crime drama filmed entirely across the Pittsburgh region of western Pennsylvania. Principal photography ran from July 21 to December 19, 2025, under the working title Parallax.

Nocturne is based on Lars Kepler’s internationally bestselling crime novels Lazarus and The Sandman. Created by Rowan Joffé (Brighton Rock) and developed by showrunner John Hlavin (The Shield, Shooter). Tim Van Patten (Boardwalk Empire) directs the first two episodes. A+E Studios produces with Range Studios.

Liev Schreiber plays Jonah Lynn – an ex-soldier turned Philadelphia homicide detective who moves with his family to a small town in western Pennsylvania for a quiet life. What he finds is Jurek Walter – Graham – a serial killer locked in the basement of Riverside Psychiatric Hospital under six feet of concrete. People are starting to disappear again, just like before.

Vandergrift and West Mifflin

Filming took place in Vandergrift – the historic planned industrial town in Westmoreland County, northeast of Pittsburgh, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1895. Vandergrift Borough Council President Tom Holmes confirmed the production’s arrival: “It is an important thing. It helps the economy of the small businesses in town. They shop and eat at our local restaurants, and it helps all the way around.” Holmes noted it had been about ten years since a production had filmed in Vandergrift before Parallax arrived.

In the summer of 2025, the Casino Theatre at 145 Lincoln Street – a 125-year-old venue in the heart of downtown – was transformed into Banshee City Hall for the production. The surrounding downtown streets, including Washington, Grant and Columbia Avenues, were used for filming. An office building in Vandergrift became the Banshee Public Library. The old J.C. Penney store – vacant for years – was brought back to life as Banshee’s Sheriff’s Department.

The Riverside Psychiatric Hospital, where Jurek Walter is confined under six feet of concrete – was filmed at the Community College of Allegheny County’s South Campus at 1750 Clairton Road in West Mifflin, in the fall of 2025. CCAC film students expressed interest on social media in participating in the production.

Dormont and New Kensington

The fictional town of Fairhaven was filmed in Dormont. The Dor-Stop Restaurant at 1430 Potomac Avenue was renamed The Counter Stop for filming – with the production crew asking the owner whether they wanted to keep the new name afterward. They changed it back. The restaurant was closed for filming on August 21, 22 and 25, with additional scenes filmed on October 12 and 13. In the weekend of August 23 and 24, the restaurant served customers as normal within the ambiance of the series set.

Filming took place in New Kensington, northeast of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. On November 12, 2025, the production team filmed at the Allegheny Terminal off Industrial Boulevard. Film equipment was also spotted at Central City Plaza and Barnes Street parking lots during the same week.

South Buffalo and Beaver

Technical scouting began in July 2025 in the small Clinton neighbourhood of South Buffalo Township in Armstrong County – a riverside community along the Allegheny River. Residents in the Clinton neighbourhood received flyers in early July informing them a technical scouting group would be in the area. “This involves department heads and key crew members visiting the area to plan and coordinate the shoot,” the notice read. Production shoots in the area extended intermittently through Thanksgiving 2025.

Filming also took place in Beaver – the county seat of Beaver County west of Pittsburgh – near the Beaver Gazebo and Fifth Street.

Nocturne premieres on Apple TV+ on October 30, 2026.
