A German castle and the streets of Oxford: The filming locations of Maxton Hall

Maxton Hall

The serie Maxton Hall is set in England. Almost none of it was filmed there. That gap — between a fictional British elite boarding school and its very real German neo-Gothic stand-in — is an elegantly executed location illusion. And it is about to be repeated for the third and final time.

Maxton Hall — The World Between Us is Amazon Prime Video's most successful non-English-language series ever, reaching number one in over 120 countries after its premiere on May 9, 2024. Season 2 arrived on November 7, 2025. Season 3 — confirmed in June 2025, already wrapped, based on Save Us, the third and final part of Mona Kasten's bestselling novel trilogy — is scheduled for December 2026.

Marienburg Castle, Pattensen

The fictional Maxton Hall boarding school is Marienburg Castle — a neo-Gothic masterpiece built between 1858 and 1867 in Pattensen, about 30 kilometres south of Hanover in Lower Saxony. King George V of Hanover had it built as a birthday gift for his wife Queen Marie. On screen, it becomes England's most exclusive boarding school. For season 3, Marienburg Castle returns.

Marienburg Castle is currently closed to the public for renovations, but the exterior with its turrets, battlements and neo-Gothic architecture remains visible and is considered a destination in its own right. The Pattensen Time Travel app offers a digital interactive tour with 15 stations and 360° panoramas for those who want to experience the Maxton Hall locations from a distance.

Potsdam and Berlin

Beyond the castle, the production's German work spread across Brandenburg. The St. Nicholas Church on the Old Market Square, with its classical dome and columned facade, represents the University of Oxford in the series. The Museum Barberini becomes the glamorous London flagship boutique of the Beaufort family. The Potsdam City Palace also appears. Party scenes were filmed at a villa in the Neubabelsberg villa colony, one of the most prestigious lakeside residential areas in Germany. Ruby's family home is located in the New Garden. The Beaufort family's ancestral seat is represented by Gut Ganz manor house in Kyritz, a small town in the Prignitz region west of Berlin.

Filming for season two shifted its German base to Berlin.

Oxford and London

The University of Oxford and St. Hilda's College appear in both seasons. Oxford's High Street and Magdalen Bridge appear in street scenes across episodes. The Turf Tavern — a pub that has stood since 1381, tucked down a narrow alleyway — appears as a student gathering point. A café in Oxford's Jericho neighbourhood appeared in Season 1 as Ruby's workplace. For season 3, Oxford returns.

London filming across all three seasons has concentrated on the city's financial and luxury districts — Piccadilly Circus, Bond Street, the City of London.

Maxton Hall season 3 premieres in December 2026 on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and regions worldwide.
