Director Evan Miller had a simple and uncompromising rule for his debut feature: film where the story actually happens. The scenic landscapes and small-town streets of Southwest Texas became the canvas for Due West, with production spanning Alpine, Marfa and Marathon. The film was also shot in Wimberley, Texas, in winter 2024.
Due West stars Adrianne Palicki as The Woman – a West Texan facing a medical crisis who is forced to break the law to get the care she needs. Palicki noted the particular irony of the situation: Texas tax incentives enabled the independent film to shoot in Marfa, Marathon and Alpine – the very state that had passed strict abortion laws. "It kind of became Evan and I against the world as far as getting money for this thing, which is very difficult to get money for a movie about abortion in Texas," she said.
The film had its world premiere at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 26, 2025, and has been building a quiet, committed following since. Henry Thomas, Ciara Bravo, Matt Lauria, Odette Annable and Austin Nichols round out the cast.
Alpine, Marfa and Marathon
Alpine's East Holland Avenue was transformed into a film set, with both street scenes and specific interiors used. A room in Sazzon Baja Mex Restaurant was reimagined as a pharmacy – demonstrating the lengths to which the production went to use actual local businesses rather than constructed sets. Alpine is the largest of the three principal location, sitting on the edge of the Davis Mountains. It is where real people in this part of Texas go for services that the smaller towns cannot provide. That geography is the film's entire argument.
The production also filmed in Marfa, but no specific locations has been confirmed.
In Marthon they filmed at SW 1st Street. With production set up in front of the Marathon Helath Center and Ritchey Brothers.
