Liverpool has now hosted three consecutive DC productions under James Gunn's new DCU. The Batman used it for Gotham. The Batman: Part II is using it for Gotham. And in the summer of 2025, Clayface arrived in Derby Square, the Pier Head and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with a map of Gotham City and a working title – Corinthians – that told the locals precisely nothing.
Clayface is a body horror film directed by James Watkins (Woman in Black, Beast), written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, and produced by DC Studios and 6th & Idaho Productions.
Principal photography began on August 31, 2025 in Liverpool and ran through early November, with additional work in Manchester and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. The film opens in US cinemas on October 23, 2026.
Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen – a rising movie star who, after being brutally disfigured, becomes the shape-shifting creature known as Clayface. Naomi Ackie plays an Elizabeth Holmes-style scientist. Max Minghella plays a Gotham City police detective. Eddie Marsan plays an undisclosed role. Rob Hardy serves as cinematographer.

Principal photography took place in late August/early September 2025 in Derby Square, with the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts building dressed as Gotham Hospital, surrounded by ambulances and fake rubble, and adorned with graffiti. The first set photos showed Harries being rushed to hospital in the origin sequence, establishing what Clayface becomes.
Prolific North reported filming around Water Street and the Cunard Building, with artificial rain equipment and fake graffiti helping transform their appearance. India Buildings was used for street scenes decorated with Gotham-themed posters and littered with rubbish.
The Aloft Hotel in North John Street – formerly the Royal Insurance Building, its Baroque Revival facade one of the more imposing period commercial buildings in Liverpool's city centre – was used for scenes featuring Eddie Marsan.
Seacombe Ferry Terminal – across the Mersey in Wallasey, its Grade II listed 1930s terminal building facing back toward Liverpool – also featured in the Guide Liverpool's confirmed location list.

Liverpool Central Library on William Brown Street became Gotham City Crown Court. Liverpool Crown Court and Derby Square are also identified in production reports as courthouse locations.
In September 2025, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Hope Street was transformed into Club Vesuvius – a Gotham City nightclub – with red neon signage installed on the building's exterior. Production involved night shoots featuring police cars arriving outside with lights flashing, a detective running inside and actors and crew working around the modified entrance. The Liverpool Echo confirmed the scene: Gotham City police cars outside the nightclub, lights flashing, detective heading in.
Night-time filming took place at St George's Hall on Lime Street and at the Pier Head and waterfront areas for exterior Gotham City scenes.
The Manchester Evening News reported that several Manchester locations, including Castlefield, became unrecognisable thanks to their Gotham City recreations. It was transformed into a gritty Gotham homeless bunker camp, complete with graffiti and telephone boxes.
And in Stockport, the art deco Stockport Plaza cinema on Mersey Square was dressed for an apparent film premiere of The Light Between – a movie within the movie, featuring paparazzi lights and overturned Gotham-themed vehicles.
Clayface opens in US cinemas on October 23, 2026.
