A MovieWalk is a self-guided walking tour that takes you to the real filming locations of your favourite films and series. No tour guide. No group. No fixed time. Just you, your phone and the city – seen through the eyes of cinema.
You download the free MovieWalks app, choose a city walk, and go. At each stop, the app reveals what was filmed there, how it was done, and what the cameras never showed you. Behind-the-scenes stories. Fun facts. Everything you need to turn a city walk into a movie experience.
The fountain from Spiderman Returns. The hotel from The Matrix. The Opera House from Anyone But You. Still there. Exactly as they were. Walk up, look around – and Sydney will never look the same again.

The Matrix
A black cat crosses the stairs. Then crosses again. Reality breaks. Neo sees it. You will too – right here, on the Pitt Street staircase. A post office turned hotel turned movie set. The Matrix was planned shot by shot. Nothing was left to chance. Not even the cat.
The Fall Guy
Sydney’s Opera House stands still. Then Hollywood takes over. Sand covers the steps. Rain pours. Stunts fly. Ryan Gosling falls – for a living. A world heritage site turned sci-fi battlefield. The city didn’t flinch. It cheered.
Mission: Impossible II
The mission ends. The explosions stop. Ethan Hunt walks. No running. No stunts. Just Sydney’s Botanic Gardens, a kiss, and the harbour below. The biggest film of 2000 – and this quiet scene stole the show.

You don’t need to make a reservation or plan ahead when you go on a MovieWalk. Just pick a walk, download it, and you can start walking right away or whenever you want.
Absolutely. You can go for a walk with whoever you want—alone or with friends. Since it’s fun to follow along on your device, it’s best to have multiple devices for larger groups.
Once MovieWalk has been downloaded, the app does not require access to the mobile network. The only requirement is that GPS is enabled; this feature is free to use. However, please note that you will need internet access if you want to use external links.
Our MovieWalks are usually about 3 kilometers long. The duration of the walk depends, of course, on your walking speed and how long you want to stay at each location. But we estimate that it will take about 2 hours.
Once you purchase a MovieWalk, you can start it whenever you wish; there’s no time limit. The walk will remain accessible in the app linked to the account you used for the purchase, so even if you switch mobile phones, your MovieWalks will still be available.
This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Sydney – the one that gave Tom Cruise his romantic ending, dressed Superman in 80 suits, and turned the Opera House steps into a sandstorm. The city where the harbour is always in frame and the stunts are always real.
At the Royal Botanic Gardens, where Tom Cruise walked through the trees with Thandiwe Newton and finally got the girl in the last scene of Mission: Impossible II. No explosions. No masks. Just a kiss and an aerial sweep over Sydney Harbour. The production shot across the city in 1999 – the largest shoot Fox Studios Sydney had ever hosted. The film became the biggest box office hit of 2000, earning over 546 million dollars.
Cinematic stops. Each one a film location. Each one a story you didn’t know.
Walk to the Sydney Opera House, where Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell shared a final kiss on the steps in Anyone But You. The location manager described the approval process: there is no checkbox for having an actor jump out of a rescue helicopter onto the Opera House steps. Every governing body had to sign off separately. The city’s film authorities had one attitude – “if we can, we will.” They could. They did.
At Martin Place, where Superman caught a runaway car and placed it gently beside the fountain in Superman Returns – a shot that directly mirrors the cover of Action Comics #1 from 1938. During filming, crew walkie-talkies were stolen and pranksters used them to shout fake “cut” and “action” calls mid-stunt. It nearly caused serious injury. The production made around 80 suits, 100 capes, 30 pairs of boots, and 90 belts – because the spandex looked perfect on camera but stretched and sagged within hours.
This is Sydney through the lens of cinema. Mission: Impossible II. Anyone But You. Superman Returns. The Matrix. The Fall Guy. Finding Nemo. Films that chose Sydney not because it was exotic – but because no other city reflects light quite like this.
The MovieWalks Sydney Centre tour is a self-guided film location walk through the harbour heart of the city. No group. No fixed schedule. Download the app, start at George Street, and walk at your own pace through one of the most cinematic waterfronts on earth.
