Start at the San Francisco Public Library, where Nicolas Cage read Hemingway aloud to Meg Ryan in City of Angels. The film is set in Los Angeles, but this scene was shot here – six floors of glass and concrete opened in 1996. Cage’s angel picks up A Moveable Feast and reads a passage about oysters, cold wine, and the moment emptiness turns into happiness. Hemingway wrote about Paris. The camera filmed in San Francisco. The love story pretended to be in LA.

Walk to San Francisco City Hall, where Harrison Ford and Karen Allen walked down the Grand Staircase in the final scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones’s hat – the one that became the most famous prop in cinema – came from a shop on Savile Row in London. The costume designer grabbed it, twisted it, and sat on it with Harrison Ford until it looked like it had survived a decade of archaeology. He wore a second, cleaner version for this City Hall scene. The dome above them is taller than the one at the United States Capitol.

Continue to the Brocklebank Apartments on Nob Hill, where Kim Novak drove away in a green 1957 Jaguar while James Stewart followed her through the city in Vertigo. Hitchcock had the car painted that specific shade of green – a colour that returns in her dress, in the lighting, in every scene that blurs reality and obsession. The route Scottie drives while tailing Madeleine is geographically correct. You can still follow it today.
