This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Rome – the one Fellini soaked in vodka, Julia Roberts ate her way through, and Tom Cruise sped past on a boat going the wrong direction twice. The city where every fountain is a film set and every piazza looks like cinema.

Start at the Trevi Fountain, where Anita Ekberg stepped into the water and Marcello Mastroianni followed – drunk on an entire bottle of vodka because he couldn’t stop shivering in La Dolce Vita. They filmed for a week in March, at night, to avoid the tourists. Fellini complained the water looked dirty. An airline representative on set offered green sea dye. They used it. The film is in black and white.

Walk to Piazza Navona, where Julia Roberts sat on a bench eating gelato with a couple of nuns in Eat Pray Love. The scene lasts a few seconds. It became one of the film’s most iconic images – probably because the grey-blue doors of Sant’Agnese behind her perfectly matched the film’s colour palette. Around the corner, in Piazza di San Simeone, Roberts filmed the restaurant scene where she orders in Italian. She admitted to gaining seven pounds from all the pasta across multiple takes. Rome’s tourism board couldn’t have asked for better publicity.

Continue to Piazza di San Simeone, where Diane Lane pretended to know a stranger to escape three men following her in Under the Tuscan Sun. The stranger was Raoul Bova. They ended up talking in the square. The film exists because producer Tom Sternberg ran into author Frances Mayes at a wine bar in Northern Italy while shooting The Talented Mr. Ripley. He reread her memoir that night and saw a movie in it.
