This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Paris – the one that dressed Anne Hathaway, chased Tom Cruise, and gave a janitor the keys to the Louvre. The city where every arcade hides a spy and every fountain has swallowed a phone.

Start at Place de la Concorde, where Anne Hathaway threw her phone into the fountain to silence Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. Hathaway exits a car, walks a few steps, and drops the phone into the water. Except she exits the car in America. The next shot is Paris. Streep never set foot in France for this film. The costume budget was over a million dollars – every piece was auctioned afterwards for breast cancer research. Streep kept one thing: her Gucci sunglasses. She wore them again as Donna in Mamma Mia.

Walk to the Louvre, where Omar Sy worked as a janitor, admired a necklace, and walked out with it in the first episode of Lupin. The production team had less than forty hours to set up, film, and disassemble everything – during the museum’s Tuesday closure. The emergency hatch through which Assane escapes with the loot is real. It’s south of the Grand Pyramid, and if you look closely, you can still see the staircase. Standing alone in front of the Mona Lisa, the production designer called it “absolutely extraordinary.”

Continue to Rue de Richelieu, where Tom Cruise walked through the arcades and into the gardens of Palais-Royal in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Unlike most action films, director Christopher McQuarrie shot the entire sequence in one continuous area – arcades to garden, no cuts to another continent. Cruise called the film a love letter to Paris. The shoot lasted thirty-six days and involved over five thousand people.
