This self-guided walking tour takes you through the real Florence – the one that lured Tom Hanks into a code, Anthony Hopkins into exile, and Helena Bonham Carter into a room without a view. The city where every piazza is a painting – and every painting is a clue.

Start at Ponte Vecchio, where Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones raced through the Vasari Corridor in Inferno – a secret passageway built so the Medici could cross the river without mixing with common people. The corridor still connects the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti, and it’s still filled with art. During filming, the production used the codename “Headache.” A local sandwich shop named a panino after the movie.

Walk to Piazzale degli Uffizi, where Anthony Hopkins dropped a letter in a mailbox as Hannibal Lecter – hiding in plain sight among the tourists, the statues, and the Renaissance. Ridley Scott had never filmed in Florence before. He called it “organized chaos” – traffic impossible, tourists everywhere, the city at peak season. But for a cannibal in exile, he said, nowhere else would do.

Continue to Piazza della Signoria, where Helena Bonham Carter witnessed a stabbing near the Fountain of Neptune and fainted into the arms of Julian Sands in A Room with a View. Producer Ismail Merchant had the entire piazza cleared for the scene. The pension where Lucy stayed was real – it’s now the Hotel Degli Orafi, and you can still book Room 414 with its terrace overlooking the Arno.
