Channing Tatum reported filming in the Charlotte region

Roofman

january // 2025

The upcoming true-crime drama Roofman, starring Channing Tatum and directed by Derek Cianfrance, went into production in North Carolina in late 2024. The story follows real-life serial robber Jeffrey Manchester, and the production has turned various local spots into authentic backdrops.

In Charlotte, crews took over streets around South End—particularly South Clarkson Street and West Summit Avenue—shooting intense driving sequences that even prompted temporary road closures. Nearby, Gastonia—just a stone’s throw away—hosted principal photography, with key scenes unfolding around Freedom Park, Mecklenburg County Jail North, and the Gaston County Courthouse.

Further south, the town of Waxhaw provided a nostalgic setting when a defunct Burger King was ingeniously transformed into a McDonald’s for a robbery scene, earning praise from locals for its attention to detail. And in Pineville, a shopping center near a dentist office and Dollar General became the backdrop for courtroom sequences.

Beyond these, reported filming also took place at an abandoned Toys “R” Us and Circuit City in the Charlotte area—echoing Manchester’s own hideouts during his fugitive days. With contributors from the Charlotte Film Commission and casting calls for locals, the production breathed life—and local flavour—into the Midtown sets.
